Uplink

words and music by David Baumert

From the album:  Stereo Biplane

The Story:

This song was inspired by the rocking Bob Marley covers rendered by Pocatello's Center Street Reggae and other courageous bands on the Rocky Mountain ski-resort circuit in the late '80's.  Boulder's Little Women (featuring Jerry Joseph) would re-wire old C&W songs with a slow skanky back-beat, bringing a completely new musical flavor to Idaho's snowy taverns.  It brought the tie-dies in from the woods to dance among the redneck rock-and-rollers and two-stepping ranch hands.  I love the juxtaposition of falling snow with a Caribbean soundtrack.  Praise the lord and pass it to the left. --dB

Lyrics:

Suppose I made the link-up,

was getting through today

and every word I uttered,

would go and find its way

What would I do? What would I do?

Oh Muse become my friend

I must be true, I must be true

Must hold faith 'til the end

I've got to put the meaning

into everything I say

If God's own ear is turning

I must believe what I pray

If I knew what I'm saying

was being heard by all

I'd have to take the responsibility,

I could not let them fall

I must be true, I must be true

Must hold faith 'til the end

and all I do, yes all I do

must guide the world to him

I've got to put the meaning

into everything I say

If God's own ear is turning

I must believe what I pray

If this is the beginning,

Of a life-long talk with God

I've got to see the freeing

of all doubt within my heart

I must be true, I must be true

Must hold faith 'til the end

and all I do, yes all I do

must guide the world to him

I've got to put the meaning

into everything I say

If God's own ear is turning

I must believe what I pray
