Make It

by David Baumert

From the album:  Stereo Biplane

The Story:

I wrote this one for my younger cousin Michael Morphey, a righteous dude who forces me to think hard about life and what it means.   A few years ago we hit a rough patch and were having a hard time communicating.  This song is an attempt to let him know that I understand that nobody has much control over anything except themselves, and even that can be tenuous.  --dB

Lyrics:

I woke up with the smile of health

and said "all right, boy" you've been good to yourself

The sun came shining down upon my face

I turned my eyes to heaven and said "Thank you for this day"

Then I said Oh-oh, I didn't know if I would make it

Oh-oh, I didn't know if I could make it alone

I hit the street like a year old dog

I fell into the beat and got caught up in it all

That ocean of faces parted 'fore my stride

I could feel my life pumpin', my heart gettin' it right

Then I said Oh-oh, I didn't know if I could take it

Oh-oh, I didn't know if I could make it alone

I know that life is gamble and your balls are the dice

and that statue of virtue is only carved in ice

and that rock that you cling to may well crumble away

and only you can be your savior at the end of the day

Then I said Oh-oh, I didn't know you would make it

Oh-oh, I didn't know if you could make it alone
